Chicago residents are constantly reminded by Mayor Rahm Emanuel, Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy and the local media who provides their cover, that the crime rate for the city is down. However, the Chicago Police Department’s own accounting shows shooting incidents are now up 3% for 2014., a website that compiles real-time crime data in Chicago from various sources including local media and the Chicago Police Department, reports there have been 1451 shootings this year. That number equates to 41 shootings per week and 181 per month.

August has been horrendous thus far, with 41 shot and killed, out of 46 total homicides with 221 shootings. Sadly, the month isn’t behind us yet, as we are on the heels of another long weekend.

There were 11 people killed and over 60 shot during Independence Day weekend in July.
