The stories continue about how Chicago’s murder rate has dropped to it’s lowest in decades. According to the statistics provided to the FBI by Rahm Emanuel and Garry McCarthy, that is correct. But when you break down Chicago’s murder rate per capita it is higher than the largest metropolitan areas in the country, New York and Los Angeles.

According to the FBI, Chicago has 6.4 murders per 100,000 people. That is almost twice the rate of New York. That city has only 3.5 murders per 100,000 people. Los Angeles is higher, but is still only at 4.5 murders per 100,000 people.
