It started at 6:00pm and lasted till 9:30. During that time Occupiers stormed a CTA station, jumping over turnstiles, and practiced mouthing off at police. At one point, an elderly gentleman punched one of the Occupiers as they marched through his neighborhood. Watch the livestream here.

On Socialism A friend who most often sees political issues differently than I recently sent me an excerpt from an article in Daily Finance with the subject line “not bad for a socialist.” The article said Fortune 500 companies’ profits increased 16.4% over last year and exceeded “the roaring economy” of 2006. (Interesting the left was not describing it such in that year’s midterm elections.) I presume he saw the article as evidence that President Obama is not a socialist. To be clear, I believe it is a mistake to allege Obama is a socialist as it is counter productive. The last generation outputted from the state-controlled school system does not know the meaning of the word. Describing the President as an advocate of big, obtrusive government is descriptive with more impact. Socialism is defined as an economic system in which the state has ownership or control over the means of production. Control can be acquired through regulation, taxation, public ridicule or other bullying tactics (think Boeing) without ownership (think GM). National Socialists (the real name rather than the acronym) found control more effective than ownership. Without outright ownership a scapegoat is available for politicians to lay blame for problems.
The National Republican Congressional Committee supported Bob Dold’s 2010 campaign as one of its ostensibly conservative “Young Guns” candidates. With this help from the NRCC, Bob Dold was elected to Congress. On May 9, less than two years after this inflow of funds from the Republican Party, Representative Bob Dold (R-IL) introduced legislation protecting funding of Planned Parenthood. This stands in stark contrast to legislation passed last year by the House seeking to eliminate all federal funding. All but seven Republicans voted in favor of this ban. In 2010, Planned Parenthood provided more than 329,445 abortions. This makes it the largest abortion services provider in the county. In that same year, 46% of its more than $1 billion in revenue came from government health services grants and reimbursements! Nearly 70% of its expenses fell under the “medical services” category which includes abortion services. Partially due to this inflow of government funding, Planned Parenthood’s assets exceed its liabilities by more than $1 billion. That’s quite a strong balance sheet! Despite the fact that many of Bob Dold’s constituents oppose being forced to fund an abortion services provider, despite the fact that these funds could easily be directed to health organizations which [...]

Is Republican senatorial candidate Mark Neumann attempting to stack this upcoming weekend’s Wisconsin Republican state convention with delegates? Or is the “Establishment” attempting to freeze out grassroots activists from the state convention? A close look at the facts suggests both accusations might be true. During the state convention, candidates vie for official Republican Party of Wisconsin endorsements leading to the August 14 congressional primary. This year, Mark Neumann is competing with former Governor Tommy Thompson, state representative Jeff Fitzgerald, and businessman Eric Hovde for this trophy. The delegates will play an important role in determining official state party endorsements. As such, all candidates attempt to win the support of delegates prior to the convention. The Republican Party of Wisconsin Constitution governs the selection of delegates to the state convention. Article VIII, Section 4 states, Such delegates shall be elected by members in good standing of the Republican organization in each county at the regularly called County Caucus for the election of such delegates. The members in good standing at the County Caucus may authorize the County Chairman to substitute delegates after the County Caucus if the County Chairman certifies in writing that the added delegate is a member in good [...]

The recall primary election is behind held in Wisconsin today. Governor Scott Walker faces “progressive Republican,” aka interloper Arthur Kohl-Riggs and the democrats can choose between ultra Leftist Kathleen Falk and Tom Barrett. While Walker is the clear favorite in the Republican primary and Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett is favored over Falk, there is one fear that some have pointed out after observing the Wisconsin ballot: ANYONE can vote for either party on the ballot. A picture of today’s recall ballot is below: As long as voters do not for more than one candidate running for the same office (meaning you can’t vote in both the Republican and a Democrat races), a Democrat can vote for a Republican and vice versa on the same ballot. What does that mean? Well, some Democrats might prefer not to wait for the recall election in June and instead vote Walker out now by casting a primary vote for Kohl-Riggs. For this reason is it imperative that Republicans in Wisconsin get out the vote today.

Does Pace expect $7.90 diesel fuel? The Chicago suburban Pace bus system has purchased new diesel-electric hybrid buses because they hope the buses will be more cost-effective over a 12-year life span, according to Pace Chairman Rick Kwasneski. The hybrid buses, which are made in Canada, cost $525,000 each as opposed to regular diesel powered buses that cost $288,000. According to manufacturer Orion the hybrid buses will save 30,000 gallons of fuel over their lifetime. If the manufacturer’s fuel saving estimate is correct, over the lifetime of a hybrid bus the 30,000 gallon fuel saving will need to offset the $237,000 higher purchase price. Given these assumptions, in order for the hybrid to be “cost effective” diesel fuel costs must average more than $7.90 per gallon over the life of the bus. The diesel break-even price would be even higher if we added the expected six-year battery replacement cost (research shows the expectation optimistic) and a present money value consideration to the equation. Simple calculations show considerations other than cost saving must have driven the decision to purchase the hybrid buses. “We’re always looking for ways to reduce our carbon footprint” said Kwasneski. Pace’s projected 2012 operating expenses are $321 [...]

The Dick Lugar campaign recently trumpeted its endorsement from the Lunch Pail Republicans, expressing “gratitude” to the new organization for it support. The Lunch Pail Republicans committee claims to be comprised of “Indiana Republicans” striving to return Indiana to “traditional core Republican values that used to define who we are.” Extensive research suggests both claims are a distortion of the truth! According to the organization’s first and only quarterly FEC filing, the Lunch Pail Republicans received $100,000 funding earlier this year. ALL of this funding came from the Engineers Political Education Committee (EPEC). To be clear, every dollar of funds collected by the Lunch Pail Republicans came from a single donor, the EPEC. Not a single dollar reported came from any of the “Indiana Republicans” the organization claims to represent. Let’s follow the money now. Every dollar funding Lunch Pail Republicans came from EPEC. What types of candidates does EPEC typically support? During the last election cycle, EPEC contributed over $2,000,000 to congressional races. Nearly 90% of those funds went to Democrats. EPEC’s most recent monthly filing covering March of this year shows a similar breakdown. In March, EPEC contributed to Representative Jim Moran, who recently tried to censor advertisement [...]

The Center for Media and Democracy proudly leads the charge against the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC), an organization dedicated to advancing limited government, free markets, federalism, and individual liberty. Several leading corporations have announced plans to withdraw membership contributions from ALEC following this outcry. Who funds the Center for Media and Democracy? The website proclaims, “We accept no funding from for-profit corporations or grants from the government.” Based on this statement, one might be fooled into thinking that indeed no tax dollars find their way into the coffers of this progressive organization. However, the truth suggests otherwise. One of the prominent contributors to the Center for Media and Democracy is the Tides Foundation. As it turns out, both the Tides Foundation and the related Tides Center receive funding from the federal government in the form of grants from an array of agencies. These include the Environmental Protection Agency, Department of Housing and Urban Development, Department of Energy, and the Department of Agriculture. According to the government database, www.usaspending.gov, the Tides Center received more than $3,000,000 in federal funding since 2000; the Tides Foundation received in excess of $800,000 in the same period.
