At the Congressional Black Caucus Conference in Washington, D.C. last week, Congressman Keith Ellison excused big labor unions’ deep rooted history of racism.

I live in a big, deep blue union town. Most of the higher paid, highly skilled union jobs (carpenters, electricians, etc.) are held by whites, many of whom are relatives of union members, while the lower level unions, such as the Laborers and Teamsters, are dominated by blacks and Latinos. Yet no one ever says anything about this. I wonder why?

Why does this argument not at least merit consideration when thinking about the Republican Party and the black community. I would say being the party founded on abolition that overwhelmingly supported the Civil Rights Acts of the 50’s and 60’s should at least get the same evened out approach the UAW does for sponsoring a parade regardless of both real and perceived issues since.
