Des Moines Register endorsement–Should conservatives worry?

The Des Moines Register, the most read newspaper in Iowa, not known for embracing liberty over statism, has endorsed Mitt Romney. Since picking Nixon over Kennedy the paper has only abrogated once, in 1972, from recommending the more leftist candidate.

In their endorsement of Romney the Register opined:

The president’s best efforts to resuscitate the stumbling economy have fallen short. Nothing indicates it would change with a second term in the White House….Throughout the campaign, he (Romney) has expressed faith in the private sector to fuel a more robust economic recovery if it has more confidence that the federal government will not be an obstacle. Romney has a strategy for job growth through tax and regulatory relief for small businesses, encouraging all forms of domestic energy production, education that prepares graduates with job skills, expanding foreign trade and reducing the burden of federal deficits…..That formula, coupled with his business acumen, should unlock this nation’s economic potential.

Having lived for years in Iowa, reading the Register’s editorials was to immerse oneself into the perspective of central planners. Even though a state poll years ago, suggested a Register endorsement would cause a small plurality to vote against a candidate, their endorsement has always been sought. Although according to an Iowa friend the paper has moved toward the center in recent years, the Romney endorsement is a surprise.

Ultimately, whether the snob of President Obama’s initial refusal to be interviewed on-the-record and his ending snide remark of “You’ll feel better when you give it”(endorsement) factored into the paper’s decision is irrelevant. It is a big deal, a traditionally ideologically driven newspaper rendering one of the few surprises of the campaign.

However, for some conservatives the endorsement may be a little disconcerting, perhaps a warning to be vigilant.

Have a fulfilling and profitable day,
