Today, thousands of Chicago teachers union members, Occupy activists, and bused-in union members from Wisconsin joined in Chicago’s Union Park to rally for solidarity.
CTU’s Karen Lewis, who wrapped up talks with the Chicago Public Schools said that until the union’s house of delegates reviews the latest agreement language, they are still on strike. Said Lewis: “We’re on strike! We have a framework for an agreement, not an agreement!”
Lewis was cagey yesterday when, in a press conference, she was asked why she would not provide any information about the contents of the agreement. Lewis referred her teachers to the Chicago Public Schools website for information, rather than give them information herself, which Lewis said was done based on advice from her attorney.
Some in the crowd today favored continuing the strike, while other said they feared growing animosity from the public and wanted to end it in time for Monday’s school day.
